Who Can Practice Law in Jordan? | Jordanian Bar Association Law

This article explains who is legally allowed to practice law in Jordan under the Jordanian Bar Association Law, the scope of the legal profession, and the conditions required to be registered as a practicing lawyer in Jordan.


The Legal Profession in Jordan (Article 6 – Jordanian Bar Association Law)

The legal profession is a mission that the lawyer performs with honesty and integrity for the benefit of the client, providing legal advice free from personal interest.


Lawyers in Jordan undergo formal legal education and professional training before being licensed to practice.

According to Article 6 of the Jordanian Bar Association Law, the legal profession includes:


  1. Representing others to claim and defend rights:


    • Before all courts of all types and levels (except Sharia courts).

    • Before arbitrators, public prosecution departments, administrative bodies, and judicial police.

    • Before all administrative agencies and public and private institutions.


  2. Drafting contracts and completing required legal procedures.

  3. Providing legal advice.


Registration Requirement (Article 7)


According to Article 7 of the law, anyone who practices the legal profession in Jordan must have their name registered in the register of practicing lawyers.


Conditions for Registration as a Practicing Lawyer in Jordan (Article 8)


Anyone applying for registration in the Jordanian Lawyers Register must meet the following conditions:


A. Jordanian nationality for at least ten years (with exceptions for those previously holding Arab nationality).

B. At least 23 years of age.

C. Full legal capacity.

D. Permanent residency in Jordan.

E. Good conduct and reputation, with no convictions affecting honor or integrity.

F. A recognized law degree acceptable for legal practice in the country of issuance, as approved by the Bar Council and relevant authorities.

G. Completion of the required training period.

H. Not employed by the state, municipalities, the private sector, or any other job.

I. Not a member of another union.J. Payment of all prescribed fees.

Jordanian lawyers registered before the issuance of the law are exempt from certain conditions as stipulated by the law.
